Today we tried something new. We went to La
Jolla Cove to go snorkeling. I was feeling pretty good about it; I thought this was one water activity that I could handle. You see, I don't like the water. Something about being cold and wet with water in my eyes and going up my nose.....I'd rather stay on the beach. But 15 years ago I swam around in a swimming pool with goggles and a
snorkel, and I loved it. Plus, Joey bought me my very own very cute full wetsuit. Anything seems better when you get new clothes out of the deal (does a wetsuit count as clothes??). We get to the Cove, and it is beautiful. If you have never been, put it on your 'places to go' list. It is one of our new favorites here in San Diego.
So, we get our little camp settled on the beach, the boys are climbing on the rocks and finding all kinds of critters in the tide pools, and Joey takes off. He comes back telling me about all of the fish he saw just 20-30 yards from the beach. Now it's my turn. I get in the water with little trouble, but when I put the mask and snorkel on and began to consider putting my face in that water, I had a full on panic attack. I have never experienced any thing like it in my life. I was hyperventilating, my heart was racing, and (as my boys would say) I was scared out of my shorts. Somehow Joey managed to get me back out there. The first time I put my face in the water I was telling myself over and over "just find a fish, just find a fish, just find a fish". Somehow I thought that if I saw a fish then it would all be over and I could get back to the dry land. I did see a fish, and I did actually stay out a little longer. It was fun, but every time I took my face out of the water and then had to put it back in I would have a slight moment of freaking out. I did see some big bright orange fish, a huge speckled one, and some see-through purple ones, as well as the biggest ten-foot tall seaweed ever.

The boys at the Cove before heading down to the beach.
